Looking at the Sky on Friday

I stepped outside this morning while it was snowing pretty heavily (it's stopped now; accumulation maybe one inch). The sky wasn't beautiful; it was the gray you see behind the bare branches of the young tree next to my house.

As I shot pictures the people passing in cars and trucks on the main street waved at me. They either thought I was having fun or that I was crazy... It doesn't matter to me - they were smiling.

Manic Monday - snow

Have you always wanted to:
  • learn how to make fake snow?
  • Operate a snow blower?
  • Drive a snow plow for a great urban area?
  • Build the best snowman in your neighborhood?
Well, Snow College is for you!

Snow College* is a 4 year college located on the top of Mt. Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe. It is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50 miles (80 km) east-southeast of the city of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. Mount Hood's snow-covered peak rises 11,249 feet (3,429 m) and is home to twelve glaciers and one college, Snow College.

Our students upon graduation can call the shots when it comes to lucrative jobs in the fields of global warming, making snowboards, raising snow leopards, riding snowmobiles.

The mission of Snow College – to educate students, to inspire them to love learning and to lead them to serve, cannot be accomplished without an outstanding faculty. Snow professors are unencumbered by research unlike their counterparts at 4-year institutions.

Every Spring we hold our famous festivals:

The Alumni Avalanche
The Great Badger Hunt

Directions to the College:

Drive straight up the side of Mt. Hood for just over 2 miles and park.

*Disclaimer: Snow College is a real college run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They have nothing to do with anything expressed in this post.

Snow!

Our first snow to speak of today. Mayor Bloomberg said to expect 6 inches and that he had the plows out already. Good for him! When I went out it was somewhat icy and my anti-lock brakes were working full time.

I think we got only about 3 inches at the end of the fall. It's supposed to rain tonight which would make me happy so I wouldn't have to shovel.

Oh! The Snow, The Beautiful Snow

OH! THE SNOW, THE BEAUTIFUL SNOW,
Filling the sky and the earth below,
Over the housetops, over the street,
Over the heads of people you meet.
Dancing, flirting, skimming along,
Beautiful snow! It can do no wrong;
Flying to kiss a fair lady's cheek,
Clinging to lips in frolicksome freak;
Beautiful snow from heaven above,
Pure as an angel, gentle as love!

Frolicksome freak?

Are you kidding? In Queens, NY, the snow is hard, ice-hard, and can't be shoveled any more. It has to be chopped, yup, chopped. And why am I chopping snow 2 days after the snowfall? Well, because the snow plows came down the street again last night and with its shovel angled toward my side of the street, I couldn't get my car out this morning.

Thank god I had a steel shovel...plastic shovels stink!

But I need to say that when I got my car stuck yesterday (never thought it would happen - I have front-wheel drive) 3, count 'em, 3 guys stopped to help me after acquiring shovels to dig me out. Nice guys! I offered to treat them to coffee and___ at the 7 Eleven across the street but they said no and had to get to work.

Thanks guys!
