Ruby Tuesday

Happy Ruby Tuesday guys and girls! Here are a couple of RED things I found in my archives. I'd better get out and start photographing some new RED things. If only the SNOW would go away...

The RED bus of Roosevelt Island, an island in the center of the East River off Manhattan, N.Y.

The Red here is the Red of the martyr on a white linen field - (as in linen shroud of Christ,) - it is known as the Cross of St George who was associated with England due to the values of courage and selflessness that he portrays.

And you might ask why is the flag of England flying in front of the Zion Episcopal Church in Little Neck N.Y. ?

Shall I put it out there as a question for you to guess the answer?
Yes I think I will. I'll tell you the answer tomorrow in the afternoon. (Hint: you can find out the answer by googling) Another hint: Distinguish from the National Flag of Great Britain.

Flag/Cross of St. George, his day I think is April 23, from memory. In front of the Episcopal Church because the spiritual seat is either Canterbury or Westminster?

(it's just a guess)

That red bus has loads of character! Very eye-catching! And the flag slightly furled in the breeze looks wonderful.

Hi Mary, I like your red bus (I've had them for RT too). It would look real pretty in some snow.
Our snow didn't last until morning of the night it fell. Are you ready to move?
Happy RT! You are a dear for keeping up with this nice meme.
Thank you.

Nobody's going to miss seeing that bus coming. :)
Wonderful rubies!
I know what you mean about the snow. We are having 40 degree weather today and a touch of sun. First day I've been out in awhile and I did find something for Yard Art. ;)

Now that's red!

Love your new header photo Mary, so very green. Jay and I are heading to Dublin for a few days over Passover (Easter weekend) - I can't wait!

i can't believe you've still got snow. it makes the [colour] red stand out even more prominently.

btw isn't that the Red Cross [society] flag?

eyecatching bus! I miss traveling right now. Hmm..it could be that the seat of the congregation is in England?

The red bus will be seen miles ahead.
Reminds me of the London buses, except for the size.
The English flag in front of an English originated church is only natural.
If you should happen to stumble over the Norwegian Seamen's church in NY, you'll be sure to find a Norwegian flag.

The red is just what we need right now. I'm tired of drab and grey and white! And snow. And shoveling.

I love your new header.

I'm posted.

I adore your new header! The contrasts in the sky reminds me of a fairy-tale I used to love as a kid.

The red piccies are lovely too, as usual. :)

That bus is certainly red! One couldn't miss it.

The Episcopal Church started in England, so the flag would be English..is this a trick question?

Happy RT Mary. Thanks as always for hosting.

Red always brightens up the day doesn't it? Like the way the flag is just furled in the breeze. I think we are all readu for spring.

I'm running out of reds and need to go out for my photo hunt. It's not snow that's stopping me, I'm confined to a wheel-chair due to my surgery.

Mary, thank you so much for hosting this fun party!

Reds are so welcome after seeing nothing but white and grey all week.

I hope to see some green someday soon as well.

I used to have a red bus in my Matchbox cars. It was one of my favorites.

That's the flag of St. George but St George's Day isn't until April so I don't know why the flag is being flown now.

I always love the red in your posts. Your posts make Roosevelt Island seem like such a nice little town...even if it isn't so little. Through your posts I can imagine meeting up with my postman, my grocer...It brings me back to a more simple time.

Both photos are beautiful, Mary and I read some very interesting history on the Episcopal Church, but I'm not so sure about the flag's signifigance. Can't wait to hear what you say.
Have a wonderful day!

Love that red bus.

St George's flag is to represent England - the Episcopalian church is the Anglican (Church of England) in the US.

There is quite a history of that flag, including losing its political significance for some.

LOL... I resorted to photographing my red shoes today... I forgot it was Tuesday until just now, and had photographed them for my picture of the day. It was a drab, blah kind of day again!

About the flag of St George, the red cross against a white field. This became the flag of England during the middle ages due to St George being the patron saint of England. Later it became the central cross of the Union Jack when first the cross of St Andrew for Scotland and the cross of St Patrick for Ireland were merged to become the flag for the United Kingdom. Still today the red cross on white is used as a flag of England.

At the protestant reformation the cross of St George was associated with the Church of England either as a four square flag or as a white shield with a red cross dividing in in quarters. When the emblem of a diocese was imposed on the upper left quadrant it became the flag of that diocese.

When English settlers came to America and formed Amglican parishes the same church was use to represent the Church of England in America. As the colonies became involved with the struggle for independence from England the English flag ceased to be appropriate. At the time of the revolutionary war a group of nine American diocese met in Philadelphia and founded the Protestant Episcopal church in America and developed their own flag, a red cross on a white field with nine small crosses for those original nine diocese are laid in an X on the upper left field. This continues to be the flag of the Episcopal church in the United States. Often this is seen as a shield rather than an rectangular flag.

I think that is the significance of St George's cross outside the chyrch in Mary;s photo.
