Sands Point Preserve, NY
Castle Gould and Hempstead House are located on what is now called Sands Point Preserve. The estate was created by Howard Gould, the son of financier and railroad tycoon Jay Gould, who purchased the land in 1900 and 1901. Most of the out-buildings, including the limestone stable and servants quarters now called Castle Gould, were completed by 1904. The design of Castle Gould was based on Kilkenny Castle in Ireland.

The classic style is reinforced with that pair of arches. The stonework is outstanding. Yet the formality of the design is shown by that massive shadow, and there may be a slight chill in that shade. However, the sunny landscape reappears after entering the stone portal. and we continue on our way...

Great shadows and an informative read. I would be critical of the way these folks used their wealth except that we now have many interesting places open to the public. Still, think of all the good the money might have done at the time.
I really like how you captured that lone figure peacefully strolling along. I bet it's a magical place to visit!

I like the way the enormity of the arch contrasts with the strolling person. Looks like a wonderful place for a nature hike. Thank you Dear Mary for "my" very own cupcake. I'm hoping to be able to affix it on my sidebar, so others besides myself can feast with their eyes.
