Adam Zaremba, 20, was wounded in Baghdad when a mine blew off his leg. This photograph by Nina Berman is from the book "Purple Hearts" and is part of an exhibit at the Jen Bekman Gallery in SoHo, New York.

Pfc. Alan Jermaine Lewis, 23, lost his legs in Baghdad when a mine exploded.

Here's what Gizo Town looked like after a massive earthquake of 8.0 magnitude struck the Solomons on April 2, 2007, just south of Gizo, 350km NW of Honiara. The tsunami set off by the quake caused widespread damage in the area and travellers should avoid the region while relief and recovery operations take place and monitor the news for any updates.

Despite no repetition of recent civil disturbances, or of violent home invasions targeting expatriates that occurred in Honiara in early October 2006, the security situation in and around the capital remains uncertain and could deteriorate rapidly. Ongoing political tensions remain high. Check out Safe Travel for current warnings.

If you look closely at the picture above notice the laundry hanging out to dry at the far right middle of the picture.

The red coat is probably created using Adobe Photoshop. The photo reminded me of the red-coated little girl in Schindler's List the film by Steven Spielberg.

New Dorothea Lange Photos

On Nov. 6, the New York Times reported on a trove of 800 new Japanese internment camp photos by Dorothea Lange unearthed at the National Archives. The photos were impounded by the government back when Ms. Lange took them and she never saw them again.

Quoting from the NY Times article:

During the winter of 1942, in the first heated months of America’s war with Japan, the United States government ordered tens of thousands of people of Japanese ancestry, two-thirds of them American citizens, to report to assembly centers throughout the West for transfer to internment camps.

The new photos show the stark reality of the lives of these people at various camps, Hayward, Calif. and Tanforan, California.

The pictures have been published in a book called Impounded by W.W. Norton.Take a look at some Ansel Adams' photos of the internment camps...a shocking contrast.
