Ruby Tuesday

Another Ruby Tuesday!

Yesterday we visited Roosevelt Island for the first time in our lives and we've lived in New York City ALL our lives!

Roosevelt Island Trash Can

Roosevelt Island Bus

Roosevelt Island, formerly known as Welfare Island (from 1921 to 1973), and before that Blackwell's Island, is a narrow island in the East River of New York City. It lies between the island of Manhattan to its west and the borough of Queens to its east. Running from Manhattan's East 46th to East 85th streets, it is about two miles long, with a maximum width of 800 feet, and a total area of 147 acres. The island is part of the Borough of Manhattan and New York County. Together with Mill Rock Island, Roosevelt Island constitutes New York County's Census Tract 238, which has a land area of 0.279 sq mi. and had a population of 9,520 in 2000 according to the US Census.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We went to Roosevelt Island to see the Blackwell Island Light which sits at the Northernmost end of the island.
Very vibrant reds indeed. I've always thought that Roosevelt Island would be a great place to live.
Funny how you can live somewhere for a long, long time (you ARE at least 21, aren't you, Mary?) and not see all there is to see.
Impossible to miss that trash can...or the bus. ;-)
I love both the trash can and the bus. They are wonderful. Great pictures! Red is so vibrant and happy!
I admire your vibrant and shining red colors in all your pictures, and the knife-sharp takings.
I guess I envy you, just a little.
Most I get inspired and intrigued by all the interesting details and the grader view in the pictures you share.
Have a great Ruby Tuesday.
Interesting post, Mary. I had heard of Roosevelt Island but knew nothing about it.
You certainly found some nice bright reds there!
Happy Ruby Tuesday.
Hi Mary,
The trash can and bus are vibrant reds!
I love the lighthouse! Looks like the makings of another postcard. :)
I'm glad to be back this week with grandbaby pics.
So sorry Mary. :(
I forgot to change my link. If you can please delete the wrong one.
Your red is certainly red! Wow! Fun post!
Much like the navigational aide under the GWB, I had not even considered a light in the East River! Roosevelt Island must be a treat, although I'd hate to stuck on the tram like a few years ago...a nice place, of the City but not necessarily in the city
Mojo said...
By NYC standards, I guess that's downright sparse population density.
There are places I've never been in my hometown despite living here for most of the last ahemcoughflurtmyty years and it's nowhere close to the size of NYC. So don't feel too bad.
Pretty cool little sandbar you have there!
Some interesting, bright reds on Roosevelt Island! A very artistically shaped trash can and for some reason, I always find red buses are quite magical!
Interesting post. I know what it is to live close to something and not actually go to see it-we lived within a 2 hour drive of Yosemite National Park for my whole childhood but we never went there until I was a teenager.
I love the bus!
Kewl RUBY trash can and public transport too. I don't think I've been to this island on any of my visits to New York, but your last view is lovely ;--)
