Genarlow Wilson's Tragic Sentencing for Consensual Oral Sex

By Van Jones and James Rucker, Color of Change. Posted June 19, 2007.

After a judge dismissed the sentence of Genarlow Wilson -- an honor roll student and homecoming king serving 10 years in prison for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old when he was 17 -- Georgia's attorney general appealed, leaving Wilson stuck in jail.

Yet, immediately after the judge's ruling, Georgia's attorney general, Thurbert E. Baker, filed a notice saying that his office would appeal the decision, leaving Wilson stuck in jail. Baker's actions have not only robbed Wilson of his long overdue freedom, they epitomize the insanity of a justice system that seems hell-bent on criminalizing young black men.

I heard about this case a while ago, and I find it so incredibly stupid and unfair. Ruining a young man's life for nothing.
There was also the case of a substitute teacher convicted to 40 years in prison because the computer at the classroom started showing popups with pornography and she didn't know how to stop it.
This week I read another case, about two parents convicted to over two years in prison for serving alcohol at their son's 16th birthday.
There needs to be more outrage for cases like this, and the justice system needs to focus its resources in prosecuting violent criminals instead of good, hardworking people who just made a mistake.

You make excellent points jm4847, there's always a prosecutor who thinks such people need to be taught a lesson...it's so silly and stupid.
In the case of Genarlow I think there's racism at work there...
