Yesterday Sinn Fein cast an historic vote to back police and criminal justice system of Northern Ireland. Now the process can go forward to set up a regional power-sharing government in Northern Ireland.
The vote, a momentous step for Sinn Fein, could end a political stalemate in Northern Ireland after the suspension in 2002 of a power-sharing assembly between majority pro-British Protestants and a Catholic minority who want a united Ireland.
The Protestant Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) will wait to see if they can trust Gerry Adams and his organization now to back the police. There has long been a distrust between the 2 organizations and the Catholic minority is essentially in favor of a united Ireland.
Tony Blair welcomed this historic decision and recognized the leadership it has taken to get to this point.
