Obama Says He’s ‘Surprised and Humbled’ by Nobel Prize

Published: October 9, 2009
WASHINGTON — President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” a honor that came less than nine months after he made United States history by becoming the country’s first African-American president.

Wow, I'm surprised, too. Thanks for this post Mary. I'm not surprised that he received it; just that he received it so soon.

It was now or not at all. After the bombers fly over Iran, we'll be calling him Barack W. Obama ...

Seems a bit premature to me but oh well

It seems strange to me that it's so early in his career! The other recipients (Literature, Science etc ) often have to wait years. And it's embarrassing that he's received it on the very day he's agreed to more troops going to the Middle East!

I couldn't believe it when I heard it coming back from shopping at noon in the radio ! and then I was really happy and so was the rest of the people I know and the European TVs too !

The money will go to charity. I hope he picks one that benefits the children injured by war.

Stop by my blog there's a "A Little Something On the Side" for you.

I think it is the world letting us know that the U.S. is back on the right track. It is our jobs now to make him accountable by withdrawing from war and continuing to promote peace.

I'm sad.
The man is too young and should have refused it claiming he didn't do 90% of what he has in his agenda.
He should say that maybe in the vfuture when he has an idea of his legacy he might accept it.
I have other thoughts but...
Thanks sweetie for letting me write this outburst.
Love,
Ana

I don't think it's for any one of us to say Mr Obama did or didn't deserve the Prize. The panel chose him to receive the award for their own reasons.

So I say congratulations to the President of the United States for this prestigious honor.

i will surely have to show him when he gets up!

I too was surprised, I think it's a bit early in his presidency to make awards, even though I think very, very highly of him.
However, who am I to argue with the committee? And I think maybe it's sending a good message for world peace, just as Obama does.
