Title: Arlette Dorgere, 1904 (poster)
Artist:Jules Cheret
Heigth= 48
Width= 18

Arlette Dorgère
Paris, France

Although information on Arlette Dorgère's early life is somewhat sketchy, she landed on the international stage by the young age of 19. Among Arlette Dorgère's earliest appearances in Paris was at the Théâtre des Variétés, 1903, in Claude Terrasse's operetta, Le Sire de Vergy.

Mlle Dorgère was not only a great beauty but she was also well-versed in song and dance. She appears in Rio, 1906, as a Greek dancer with the Brazillian dancer, Antonio Lopes de Amorim Diniz, known as Duque, and then, again, 1909 in a musical comedietta called "At Home", by Max Rogers in London. In 190[5?], Mllle Dorgère at the Bouffes Parisienes and appeared there again in 1912 as Colette in "La bonne veille Coutume" Later that year, she featured among the cast at "La Cigale" in the revue Arrête, Arrêtez, Chauffeur.

Arlette's love life must have made good copy. She was one of Paris' great beauties and many men fell victim to her charms. How many time she was offered marriage proposals or if she ever did marry is still unknown to us.

After retiring from the stage, we would like to believe Arlette Dorgère retired in fashion with her beauty still intact and lived in grand style throughout the rest of her life.

Today, postcards and other vintage media, of Arlette Dorgère are some of the most popular, expensive and most likely more collectible than in her own day.

I didn't pick up on the skates until I started looking at the silhouettes in the background, but I was sure they must be there, because believe it or not I actually translated the French correctly! (You have to understand... for me this is exciting.)

The old arena in Tampa where the Lightning used to play was referred to as the Ice Palace. Whether or not that was its given name I couldn't say but I would think that their first round draft pick (and still their centerpiece) Vincent LeCavalier might have referred to it as the "Palais de Glace". And surely the broadcasters on CBC or RDS would have. Although I'm not sure RDS even existed back then...

I have a book of French posters from this period, and it includes these (I think). I should go look at the book again.

Hello, teach Mary,
What an elegance.
The Lady in Red with her hour glass figure; I can imagine her sailing over the ice.
(I cannot picture how she managed to get up when falling though, in her corset and layers of underskirts!)
Cool angling of the Ruby Tuesday theme.

Years ago my Dad purchased a very old calendar and had three prints framed. He hung them on the wall and they are still there today.
Your graphic images today remind me of those. Thank you.
These are very vibrant images and I love the angle of your shots.
Great background info on them too!
Have a happy Tuesday!

You taught me something today. Of course given you're Mary the Teach.
I didn't know her. I know the places, I know Colette, of course, the novelist, ( at the time, dancer, actress, model too).

I love the angle you chose, not to frame them as we expected.

Beautiful lithographies with French elegance! I didn’t know Arlette Dorgère and it was a pleasure to read her story. Thank you for this rich and informative post! Have a nice day! :-)

Hey there Mary,

Love the one of the ice skater. I think I've seen that one somewhere before. I used to be a huge fan of skating (and then Kwan stopped competing), so I probably came across it in my quest for knowledge of all things skating.

Happy Tuesday,

If only there had been the internet when she was alive, she could have been even more famous! Silly, I know, but I think the internet has given the world so much. Beautiful prints, and thanks for sharing.

Hello, this is the first time I am taking part in RT meme.Thank you for hosting. Love your pictures, the ladies in red are very pretty and elegant.
Greetings from Malaysia.

Interesting ladies. I can't imagine an elegant lady ice-skating in those times. I'm sure it was still a conservative society.

Speaking of conservative, my post today is on the erosion of values and traditions in our Chinese wedding.

The young couple insist on black as the theme and elderly relatives were horrified as red is significant in a Chinese wedding. :)

Lady in Red… is dancing with me… cheek to cheek…..

Now I have the song stuck in my head. Mary, if my next story is a sappy throwback Clapton –esque homage to long lasting love… well, I guess I will just have to thank you.

Mine is up

love these vintage prints. but they're a bit pricey (for a peso earner like me), so when i got to paris, all i could afford was a shirt with a Le Chat Noir print.:D

I can only admire her, at least she was not dependend on a man and lead her own life, very rare at that time where women not even weren't allowed to vote !

BTW there is a beautiful collection of posters from Jules Cheret here in

Can't find Mr Linky but I have a Ruby Tuesday post! Will check back later!

I just found your blog and have a question about Ruby Tuesday. It specifically says 'photo' but I am an artist. Is it okay to use a piece of art work that displays some red, rather than a photo? or one of my enhanced photos?

Hi Mary,
Beautiful prints! I really like that lady on skates in red. Red is my favorite color! Have a great day!!

Hi Mary, these are great photos with red. It made me think what would it be like to live during the era of these ladies. :)

I love your fancy ladies. I am familiar with both of them and I do believe that I had notecards or possibly a postcard with the second one.

Happy Ruby Tuesday!

This is a tiny picture, but you can see that in the movie "Gigi", Zsa Zsa Gabor's dress in the Ice Palace scene was purposely copied from the painting.

Nice .. reminds me of the movie Moulin Rouge .. I think I may be the only one to see it who liked it
