Weekend Snapshot

I went walking in the Bronx near Montefiore Hospital and found the Bronx Historical Society headquartered in this house, The Valentine-Varian House built in 1758 when carriages traveled the nearby Boston Post Road and the Bronx was mostly farmland.

The Union soldier stands sentry next to the House and is called The Bronx River Soldier sculpted of granite by John Grignola in ca. 1909.

It's nice seeing historical places being maintained so well.
My silly dog might just bark at the soldier statue the whole day :P

Bronx mostly farmland? I guess this whole country was once a bunch of woods. Boston Post Road and your pics remind me of Lexington and Concord, which I used to enjoy visiting when I lived in the Boston area (almost 30 years of my life).

That's a nice piece of history and pretty old house for America :o) Love the stone! Have a great weekend, Mary!

Great post, Mary. What a treasure. Hard to believe the Bronx was ever rural.

I love a stone structure. Don't know why, just like the look of 'em. They are horrible to try and heat in the winter. Glad you enjoyed your trip to da Bronx ;) and shared it with the rest of us.

wonderful, I love history and would have had to stop and visited. I cannot wait to head east some day and explore our nation's history. Love your snapshots, mine is posted @ The Cafe.
