Ruby (Red) Tuesday

I have something very special for today's Ruby Tuesday post.

P.S. 1
is an internationally renowned museum devoted to contemporary art. It is known for its avant-garde exhibits and for leading the alternative space movement. Artists collaborate with the administrators, and some have studio space on site. It was once an public school but today P.S. 1 is affiliated with MoMA, but has a much looser, crazier feel. Somehow P.S. 1 has managed to stay creative even as it has gained fame and become part of the established art world.

Notice the repetition of columns all around this corner of the building. It is said an unidentified sculpture resides here.

Public School No. 1 (c. 1910)

The RED brick caught my eye. The architectural detail is exquisite. The detail of each of the 3 floors of the building is different. When it was a public school there were separate entrances for Girls and Boys on opposite sides of the building.

The P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center which is a couple of blocks away has an exhibition running right now called That Was Then...This Is Now featuring spectacular pieces including Leo Villareal’s new LED Flag installed in the P.S.1 elevator; Apolitico, an expansive outdoor flag installation by Wilfredo Prieto; Cannone Semovente, a monumental sculpture by the late Italian artist Pino Pascali; and Lawrence Weiner’s Milk and Honey, which evokes a sensuous and ephemeral dream. This group exhibition is inspired by the artistic and socio-political climate of the late 1960s, and features artists united by the desire to mobilize art as a means of change. Divided into three iconographic themes—Flags, Weapons, and Dreams—That Was Then…This Is Now places these representations as central to artists’ collective aspiration towards progress.

Lovely American architecture. Interesting about the separate entrances for boys and girls. They don't have ornamentation like that anymore.

I have a Ruby Tuesday posted scheduled for tomorrow morning... (I guess you'll put up the Mr. Linky thinga majiggy on Tuesday morning?)

That is really nice!

It's a beautiful building and looks like it was very expensive to build way back when. It was a school? REALLY!?

I love the architectural details.

The mention of the separate entrances bring back memories. While attending highschool we had a door for boys and a door for girsl. Beautiful building! Lovely soft reds.

Where is the building located? It looks very familiar. Maybe it just reminds me of a building in a similar style from the same era in Pittsburgh.

I love the older buildings, they just don't know how to build anything with character anymore. The 150 year old house I grew up in was built waaaay beter than my house which was built in 1994.

I love the columns in the building! It did give a great dramatic feel!

Not all the art here is inside this graceful building. As in my Ruby post last week, I like classic buildings clad in red stone. Nice!

I am playing again this week with a red flower.

Lovely red architectural building. The exhibit "That Was Then...This Is Now" should be real interesting. Did you view it?

I can't help noticing the yellow traffic light hanging so high up :P We don't have those in Singapore.

Happy Ruby Tuesday mary!!

The building is phenomenal and you took some outstanding photos of it. Brick almost has the same coloring of our state rock, red granite.

Hey Mary, I do leave comments. I got interrupted by the phone while doing 'Chuck's.'
Nice to check on you, Happy R(R)T!
I like the NYC Museums, we try to hit one every time we come. Of course we have the BEST here in Houston, just not so many.
(Yahoo Maps did find 448 actual public museums and art galleries
http://local.yahoo.com/results?p=museums&csz=77001
within 50 miles of the Houston Post Office)

I have WW up for today and tomorrow, it once had a red surrounding but is all brown itself, no red. And a few Colorado traveling picturesare on the other blog.
I've been terribly busy, still am.

I love the red of that brick! Buildings aren't built like that any more. It wasn't just a roof and walls, it was art.

I hope you don't mind but I just signed up for my first Ruby Tuesday. It is only noon here and still early in the day ...

A VERY impressive building! Now that I know you are running this Ruby Tuesday meme/challenge, I will have to watch for interesting red things to photograph. One comes to mind right now, so I think I will have an entry for next week... if only I can fit in the posting of it, lol. So much to do, so little time.
