What would Alex Keaton Do?

Comedy Stop: What Would Alex Keaton Do?

By Gary David Goldberg

It’s been almost 20 years since “Family Ties” went off the air. And Alex P. Keaton’s political idols, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, have each gone off to their deserved places in history. Yet I still get asked a lot — O.K. maybe not a lot but more than twice — whether Alex Keaton would be a Republican today. And, if so, who would be his candidate in the 2008 presidential election?

And BTW if you don't know who Alex P. Keaton is here's what Wikipedia has to say:

Alex P. Keaton is a fictional character, portrayed by Michael J. Fox, on the 1980s American sitcom Family Ties. Alex is most famous for being a conservative Republican, and a passionate student of economics, which is rooted in his obsession with money. In particular, he was a proponent of supply-side economics. Keaton kept a picture of Richard Nixon above his bed [1], and noted an affinity for William F. Buckley Jr., Ronald Reagan, and Milton Friedman. His favorite television show was Wall $treet Week, then hosted by Louis Rukeyser. Keaton routinely read The Wall Street Journal, and was an ardent supporter of its conservative editorial page.
The character of Alex P. Keaton became a symbol of America's move towards more conservative political thinking in the 1980s. In fact, Ronald Reagan once stated that Family Ties was his favorite television show.

One wonders if we might not be talking about Senator Alex P Keaton, Republican Presidential candidate.

Based on reading the article, I'm thinking that Alex might just be fed up with the direction of his party and decided to try and take the reigns.
