nicole, they are sitting on a dish or feeder that contains a sweet nectar. It draws butterflies big time! :)

That ape looks kinda hilarious in a way sitting like that.. hahahha, I showed my son and he asked "fake?" He thought it was a mascot or something... :P
The idea of a nectar dish is wonderful because the butterflies go there for better viewing.
