"Salome" pictorial in New York Times (1916)

Salome Pictorial - 1916

The New York Times Picture Section cover, dated Aug. 20, 1916.

Photograph of "Salome," the famous painting by Henri Regnault, finished in 1870 and presented to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by George F. Baker, who is said to have paid $125,000 for it. Recently discovered in our archives after almost a century! The New York Times Picture and Fashion Sections from the World War I era (1914-1918)

Originally printed using rotogravure technology, The New York Times Picture and Fashion Sections were popular during World War I. Now reprinted on archival, fine art, cotton rag paper, the dramatic sepia-toned section covers transform news photography into art.
