Mars Global Surveyor

NASA has lost touch with its Mars Global Surveyor according to the BBC. It's been out of contact with the Earth for more than a week. The NASA people are afraid the satellite may be showing its age.

The BBC article says "The spacecraft has entered "safe mode", awaiting further instructions from controllers on Earth."

Safe mode? Users of the Windows OS will think of "safe mode" fondly. :( If the Mars Global Surveyor has entered "safe mode" you might as well kiss it good-bye (figuratively speaking) because it's in critical condition. You might as well just let it float off into outer space happily and unmolested. It is after all 10 years old. the teach :)
