Take This Tune

This week Jamie of Take This Tune proposes the challenge of posting in song the romance of a lover thought lost who finally comes home! She suggests that the folk tale/myth lies at the heart of folk ballads such as "The Demon Lover," "John Reilly," or "Pretty, Fair Maiden in the Garden."

I searched the web for the ballad of The Demon Lover and found several versions, especially the American one called "The House Carpenter." Find below the lovely voice of Joan Baez singing the song that tells of the story of a man (usually the Devil), who returns to a former lover after a very long absence, and finds her with a husband (usually a carpenter) and a baby. He entices her to leave both behind and come with him, luring her with many ships laden with treasure. Together they board one of his ships, (which in many versions she is surprised to find does not have a crew) and put to sea.

She soon begins to lament leaving behind her child, but is heartened by spying a bright hill in the distance. Her lover informs her that the hill is heaven, where they are not bound. Instead he indicates a much darker coast, which he tells her is hell, their destination. He then breaks the ship in half with his bare hands and feet, drowning them both. In other versions, the ship is wrecked by a storm at sea.

LYRICS for "The House Carpenter"
Child Ballad #243.

"Well met, well met, said an old true love.
"Well met, well met, said he.
"I have just returned from the salt, salt sea.
"And it's all for the love of thee."
Come in, come in, my own true love,
And have a seat by me.
It's been three-fourths of a long, long year,
Since together, we have been.

"I can't come in and I can't sit down,
"For I've only a moment's time.
"They say you're married to a house carpenter,
"And your heart will never be mine.

"I could have married a King's daughter, fair,
"And she would have married me,
"But I have forsaken her crowns of gold,
"And it's all for the love of thee."

"Now you forsake your house carpenter,
"And go along with me.
"I'll take you where the grass grows green.
"On the banks of the deep blue sea."

Then she picked up a darlin' little babe,
And kisses, she gave it three.
Saying "Stay right here, my dalrin' little baby,
"And keep your pappa company."

They had not been on the ship two weeks,
I'm sure it was not three,
Till his true love began to weep and to mourn,
And she wept most bitterly.

Sayin': "Are you weepin' for my silver and my gold."
Sayin': "Are you weepin' for my store?
"Or are you weepin' for your house carpenter,
"Whose face you'll never see no more?"

"A curse, a curse to the sailor," she cried.
"A curse, a curse," she swore.
"You robbed me of my darlin' little babe,
"That I shall never see no more."

They had not been on the ship three weeks,
I'm sure it was not four,
When there came a leak in the bottom of the ship,
And sank them for to rise no more.

This ballad was one of 25 traditional works included in Ballads Weird and Wonderful (1912) and illustrated by Vernon Hill. The New York Times review of Hill's illustrations accompanying this ballad was noted as a particular highlight of his illustrations thus:

... the design of Satan rushing down through the waves with the boat containing the faithless wife, is tremendous. Satan himself has one of the most graceful and beautiful human bodies ever drawn; the rhythm of the whole is thrilling, and the conventionalized waves are splendid.

Shadow Shot Sunday

On this day it was sunny and some beautiful shadows were thrown on all the houses we saw as we drove along Lighthouse Road in Sands Point, Long Island. At this point where I took these pictures we are as far North as we can go before the Long Island Sound.

The houses in this area cost multi-millions of dollars.

You can go on over to Hey Harriet and visit Tracy and other Shadow Shot Sunday participants.

Ruby Tuesday

My Ruby Tuesday post today shows my grand-nephew, Jarome, AGAIN (Please don't get bored!) with a little touch of RED in each photo.

This time we're at the park, it's sunny and 40 degrees F. His poor mom who's from Trinidad thought it was FREEZING! So while she bounced around shifting from foot to foot, Jarome and I (Vinny and daddy Carl were with us too) went on the slide and rode his tricycle, i.e. Jarome rode the tricycle and I ran after him!

So what have you got for Ruby Tuesday? A little RED, lotsa RED? Can't wait to see...

Mr. Linky's below, waiting for your signature. Leave a comment and visit your Ruby Tuesday friends, okay?

Take This Tune

Okay Jamie see if you can follow my reasoning. I couldn't find any witty lost love songs like the ones you posted with Bob Hope. Soooooo, here's what I did.

I found a video that shows Kate and Jack from the "Lost" TV show getting together and breaking up to a song by New Kids on the Block called "Funny Feeling." Eh? eh? Whaddya say? Does it work? Lost, love, funny (witty) feeling, huh? huh?

Lyrics: Funny Feeling, New Kids on the Block

All I asked for was your hand, love
was in demand, how was I to understand?
Then you told me how you feel, it was so
unreal, guess, it's time for
me to reveal the way I feel.

Gotta funny feeling that you don't even,
even love me (Don't love me)
Gotta funny feeling that you don't even, even care.

We assured each other at the start, forever in our hearts,
you and I would never part.
Then you...
Gotta funny ....
Gotta funny ... [repeat ad lib & fade]
[end]

Shadow Shot Sunday

Tracy of Hey Harriet hosts this wonderful meme, Shadow Shot Sunday

Castle Gould
Sands Point Preserve, NY

Castle Gould and Hempstead House are located on what is now called Sands Point Preserve. The estate was created by Howard Gould, the son of financier and railroad tycoon Jay Gould, who purchased the land in 1900 and 1901. Most of the out-buildings, including the limestone stable and servants quarters now called Castle Gould, were completed by 1904. The design of Castle Gould was based on Kilkenny Castle in Ireland.

I have also wondered why the company that makes Q-Tips says not to put them in your ears. Maxine brings it up again so I went on to the web to see if there was any further information. Do you believe that the phrase "q-tips bad for ears" came up immediately as a suggested search phrase? Ha!

You can go here if you want to read more about yucky things like ear wax and such.

You can sign Mr. Linky and leave a comment if you like. Go visit others to see more about Maxine. :)

Great big bomb in a little black box?

Jewish Teen's Tefillin Causes Bomb Scare on Plane
In Life by Jeffery , on Thursday, January 21, 2010, 11:05 AM (PST)
life

17 year-old tried to explain, but to no avail.

Prejudice, precaution or paranoia? In the latest plane scare, authorities grounded a New York flight after a Jewish teen's tefillin, a set of harmless prayer straps, sparked fears of a terrorist attack.

The 17 year-old boy and his sister were on a flight from La Guardia to Louisville Thursday morning, when his religious garb caught the attention of the other passengers and the plane's crew.

His tefillin, which is a series of straps and boxes worn by some orthodox Jews to show their faith and devotion to God, was mistaken for a terrorist bomb. Even though he tried to explain the meaning of his tefillin, also called phylacteries, the young man was labeled a potential security threat and the plane was landed in Philadelphia.

After landing, security officials swept the plane for explosives but found nothing. The young man and his sister were questioned by members of the Transportation Security Administration, then were released after being cooperative.

So what do you think? Were officials taking the appropriate precautions, or does this signify a larger problem of our society's ignorance of minority cultures?

Happy Birthday Dr. King

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.... Returning violence for violence multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

--Martin Luther King Jr.

On some positions, cowardice asks the question, is it expedient? And then expedience comes along and asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? Conscience asks the question, is it right?

There comes a time when one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right. I believe today that there is a need for all people of goodwill to come with a massive act of conscience and say in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "We ain't goin' study war no more." This is the challenge facing modern man.
